Preparing for Independence Day or the Azadi Sale, I am forced to question the sentiment behind 14th August and what the year 1947 entails for every Pakistani. This year the air is different. Perhaps I am older, or simply more responsible, but I do feel that 14th August must be and is more than just decor and fireworks. If nothing else, it is, at the very least, a collective memory. A memory of a nation born from blood and sweat would not have been possible but for the prayers of an entire generation coupled with the unshaken resolve of ordinary people who chose to become extraordinary.
To us, it is the reason we exist.
1947 is the birth year of Pakistan. It was not contained in the 365 days from 1st January to 31 December 1947; rather, its momentum began much sooner, weeks, months, or even decades before the year, and to be honest, it's not over yet. Every time we, as a nation, have a new idea, achievement, or step forward, we're born again!
So, when we were choosing a name for a denim brand rooted in Pakistan, that is created on the concept of Made in Pakistan and Made for Pakistan, there was only ever one number that mattered.
Every stitch on every pair of jeans that leaves our workshop carries that year with it — a quiet tribute to the founders, the freedom fighters, and the Pakistanis of today.
For us, 1947 isn't just about creating premium denim in Pakistan; it is about honoring and physically donning and flaunting a piece of our own history, a history that to this day is shaping and redefining itself.
Shair-e-Mashriq, Dr. Allama Iqbal, while reminiscing about what had been lost under foreign rule, shook awake a whole nation, demanding of them to rediscover their own khudi, their inner strength and self-belief, before they could ever call themselves free,
Iqbal believed a nation isn't built the day independence is declared — it grows slowly, like a caterpillar breaking out of its pupa, one day at a time. A nation, he trusted, is built one day at a time, through the character and determination of its people. A nation is its people!
This very idea is the ethos and credo of 1947 Clothing. Freedom, to us, isn't a finished chapter from 1947 — it is an ongoing responsibility.
Just as history cannot be contained within a strict time frame, inqilaab or change does not happen overnight. Respect and value for freedom and identity, however, can be lost, compromised, and forgotten in everyday mundane activities.
Over the 79-odd years of Pakistan, somewhere along the way, 14th August came to be just another day off. Tragic as it is, it is not permanent. This is the mindset of a nation that was given freedom in viraasat (inheritance), and hence, we undervalue and undermine the true meaning of being a free nation. We can, however, and should actively work to change this idea. Bring home the cause, remind the youth what the founders sacrificed and why. Remember, they sacrificed so future generations could build.
So this Independence Day, we're asking our community to think differently:
A strong Pakistan isn't built by fireworks. It's built by teachers in under-resourced classrooms, volunteers in flood-hit villages, and everyday citizens who refuse to look away from what needs fixing.
A strong Pakistan will be built if we see 14th August as not a holiday, but a holy day!
